A wildlife painting of a baby black bear, long a symbol of the Smokies. He is surveying his domain from the shelter of high branches. Though unseen, mom is nearby to protect her baby from danger. Baby bears weigh an average of eight ounces at birth and stay with their moms until they reach 18 months old. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the largest protected areas in the Eastern United States for black bears.
